Long time no [community profile] thefridayfive. I still can't get over the fact that the last time I posted (before my SiWi rant) was in July?!?!?!?

1. If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?
A: Languages! I wanna know every language every where!! Of course, the first one I'd like to be an expert on is Japanese. I engage with a lot of Japanese media, and I'd love to read/watch the works in their original language!!

2. If you could do anything in the world as your career, what would you do?
A: Anything at all... this is tough!! If we're going with the same idea as above (magically become an expert), then the possibilities are endless. Even more so of the magic comes with a magical "good pay forever." With that in mind, definitely some sort of head of a bunch of libraries. Maybe someone important in the ALA... so basically what I already wanna do, just on crack and reaching waaaaay above my station LOL.

3. If you could be immortal, what age would you choose to stop aging at and why?
A: Either 12 (had a good time, contrary to most people's experiences), or some time in my later 20s. They just seem like a good place to stop.

4. If you could be any supernatural creature, what would you be and why?
A: OOOOOO THIS IS GOOOOOD... gosh I don't KNOW!!! Something that could fly, and was really clever... so probably a fairy... but I don't wanna be the size of a pea. As much as I like vampires, I wouldn't wanna since I love the sun so much. Maybeeeee a shapeshifter!! Or some high level spirit.

5. If you had to teach a class on one thing, what would you teach?
A: Ugh... I don't know... maybe like, the history of publishing, or something niche like that? I'd need to do my own research, but I wouldn't hate teaching something like that.

...I have just now, four days before I start posting the SKZ Kinktober fics, realised that posting thirty-fucking-one fics in a row means coming up with thirty-goddamnmotherfuckingfdjlasfkdja-one titles. In a row.

I mean. I did that in 2023 and 2024 Spooktober ficlets but had clearly repressed the trauma until now.

I guess just listing the kinks doesn't count as a title? Or maybe I should go for Friends style titles, like 'The One Where...'

'The One Where Chan Finds Minho's Panties and Then Pines About It for 10K'

'The One Where Jeongin Gets Tipsy Enough To Hit On A Buff Guy at the Bar'

'The One Where Hyunjin Is Seungmin's Birthday Present from His Dick Colleagues'

'The One Where Seungmin and Felix Try Cock Cages and Like It. A Lot.'

send thoughts and prayers

Sometimes you just want to play games with a single deck of cards. That's how I discover that how versatile a card game can be. XD

ito: a cooperative game where you and your friends will each get your own secret number you then have to try to put in order as a group based on the clues you give related to the chosen theme.

It's fun, easy to pick up and cause a lot of laughter when we have to figure out the ranking. Good for icebreaker. If you want more challenge, you can leave out the category cards and play "The Mind", which you all sort out cards without communication with one another in any way.

If you use only the number card 3-35, you can play a game of:
No Thanks!: Take a card, pay to say no thanks or take what you must to score the least.

It's an easy and fast paced game of bluffing and risk taking. I played the variant which all the players playing with open tokens for bidding. It really helps save time.
If you like Werewolf but you have a low player count/dislike player elimination, Cheese Thief is a fun social deduction game with no need of moderators, player elimination nor set patterns. One player is the cheese thief, while the others have to figure out who they are with die-face combinations for clues. There's only one round, one vote, so it's very fast paced. I use the 1-6 number cards to replace die and other number cards for character cards.

A rather silly horror film set in an Indonesian prison.

A journalist has just come back from investigating illegal mining – and some mysterious deaths – in Borneo, when his boss is brutally murdered. He ends up in prison, where we meet our film’s real hero Anggoro and his band of plucky misfits. After the journalist arrives, a series of gorey Hannibal-esque deaths begin. (Partway through I wondered if there was something wrong with me that this sort of thing doesn’t even shock me anymore.)

The deaths seem to occur to those who are the most angry – and who have red auras, according to one of our supernaturally inclined prisoners. The way to stop your aura becoming red? Religion or art. The prayer room films up quickly, and Anggoro and friends have to turn to the dance classes in the next room over.

Eventually the ghost’s motives are deduced, and the inmates set about enabling its mission (and using the aura-thing to their advantage). We get various critiques of Indonesian society, and of corruption in particular, along the way.

This was on at the film festival, but I held off because I thought it would be more appropriate to see it with L and H! Which I would say was the right choice.

I calmed down from the afternoon by making a bowl of pumpkin ravioli in a tomato-and-shallot sauce and even managed to eat most of it not standing over the stove. I have three pieces left of the Violet Crumble from D.C. and the mother of the family upstairs brought me a tupperware of homemade brigadeiros, not all of which are even the traditional chocolate. The nor'easter smells like autumn, cold rain and wet leaves and earlier night. I had slept minimally and dreamed about needing to organize a circus act on no notice, which I can legitimately say is not the usual anxiety.

Most of yesterday was spent flat on the couch recovering from spending the previous day folded on the train. It turns out that if I am doing functionally nothing else with my time, I can listen to five radio plays in a row before shorting out mildly in the middle of the sixth and needing to sit up reading for hours to restabilize. I was charmed by the lampshading in Joan Coggin's Why Did She Die? (1947) which doubles to catch up on previous adventures:

Mrs. Dashwood looked at Lupin out of her bright blue eyes. "I could think of a lot of reasons," she said, "but one does not often murder people in real life."

"They do if I am anywhere about," replied Lupin. "I don't know why it is, exactly, but there must be something queer about me, like those people in Greek tragedies, you know. The minute I appear upon the scene everyone cries 'let's have a murder!' First there was the curate at Glanville; it wasn't really anything to do with me, but I feel it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been there—I mean, no curates had been killed until I married Andrew. Then I went to stay with a friend for a rest-cure and a nut was loosened in her car and she was very nearly killed—as a matter of fact it turned out to be an accident in the end; but the principle is the same, and now Penelope has gone and shot herself or else someone else has shot her."

It took me a few scenes to adjust to the farcical register of Heroes of Sontar (2011), but I was so won over by the pre-flight announcement for Certain Death Airways that [personal profile] spatch handed me five dollars out of his tip money to buy my own copy in non-potato quality while it was on weekly sale from Big Finish. I still feel so weird about owning any audio that I cannot re-rip from its physical format in the event of disaster that I may burn myself a couple of CDs.

I understand that I may not have worn my boots since the spring, but since they were stored in our front hall and not, say, a tent, it seems entirely unreasonable that one of them should have had a spider in it.

We did our full moon esbat tonight. There were five of us in person plus one by phone. The moon came up through the trees. We lit a bonfire, did the coven business, and danced around the bonfire.

The altar cloth was a late summer / early fall runner with golden flowers and butterflies embroidered on it. Hilariously, a moth kept trying to pollinate the flowers! And ignored the lantern. :D

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Sticking With Something

I'm usually one who gets super excited about starting something, going in completely and enthusiastically... And then quitting after a couple of weeks. House cleaning programs like Fly lady. Self betterment programs like 101 in 1001. Everything I seem to try, I can't sustain.

Until a friend introduced me to Finch.

I don't know what it is about this app, but I've only missed one day in 614. It feels like an accomplishment. I'm not nearly as gung ho as I was. At one point, I had around 70 tasks to do every day. Most of them are simple, but can be tough when I'm the throes of depression. Like "Get out of bed". In the beginning, I was doing all these tasks every day. When I found that I could change how often I did some of the tasks, I paired things down, put most of the writing related tasks (like "Ask a friend what good qualities they think you have") less regularly - once a week, once a month, etc. It changed from being a chore back to something fun.

I've had friends that have started Finch, some for awhile and others giving it up after a couple weeks. I like being able to share goals, give me some accountability. And it makes me smile when I send them gifts through the app. Especially when I get a gratitude message from them.

The problem is that Finch is great for my mental health but trying to get other responsibilities and things I want to do doesn't for as well. When I was younger, when the kids were younger, I had a weekly cleaning schedule that I kept. I made time to work on creative things. I was part of more communities. I played regular D&D. Now I'm having truffle scheduling anything and keeping to it

My therapist is helping me with this, though I haven't been working with him long. He's good at reminding me to take baby steps with things. It's teasing out the baby steps that's the hard part.

I'll get there. Eventually. I just have to remember one of the mantras I use. "Every step gets me closer to where I want to be, regardless of how small the step is."

I recently changed my style to Librarian's Dream by branchandroot and noticed it capitalizes every word in my titles. I'm not sure how to change that as it didn't have anything for it in the main theme customizations page and I don't know how to change that in CSS or whatever either.

Back to part two
On to part four

Jules stared at his hand as it trembled ever so faintly, and picked up the handset of the old-fashioned land line. After the Quake, the waiting list for those who wanted backup for their cell phone stretched and stretched until even now, new applicants had to wait for three hours. Jules tucked the phone to his ear. “Yes?”

“Are you in a position to speak freely?” a woman asked in French-accented English.

“Not really.” Jules marched to the refrigerator, watching the phone coil stretch. He collected a bottle of fruit juice and put a glass on the counter, then turned his back on both.

“I’ll give you yes or no questions,” she began. “You sent a message to the security pasture, yes?”

Children as young as four care deeply about whether their efforts matter

A new study reveals that the need to feel our efforts matter emerges surprisingly early in childhood and can shape whether we choose to put in the work.

This has useful implications.

( This part is about Windows Vista! You may not be interested in it! )

As I've been noodling some with Puppy Linux, I have been pleasantly surprised to have moments where I go, "oh, if only they had..." only to discover they already have it, and that generally, the preinstalled program they chose is better than I expect! And two of them may be of interest to my multi friends!

I know some folks want an offline local blog or wiki for their own use: system mapping, internal communications, personal stuff like that, which they may not want online for people to find. Well, it turns out Puppy Linux just COMES with that preinstalled: PPLOG (for Puppy Personal Log) and DidiWiki. Wikis in general have not been our strength, so I couldn't really fully test that, only that it exists, I was able to open it and run it offline... I assume it would work for someone who actually knows what they're doing!

PPLOG was easier to test; I am a much better blogger than I am a Wiki-er! We were able to run it entirely offline with no trouble on this twenty-year-old laptop. It is extremely bare bones and simple: BBCODE formatting, you can insert images (through link) and URLs. It is locked with a password, which starts with a default but can be changed by you to a proper one. You can comment on the posts (no threaded comments, though), with an author field (Bob and Mori did test comments on my posts!) and each author creates their own password.

I realize that a lot of people probably make noooo faces over the idea of using some weird old Linux that might have a reputation for not being user-friendly, but DidiWiki can be downloaded for Ubuntu (and presumably other Linux things as well). And Puppy Linux in general is made to be run without a permanent install; I right now am using a CD version, with a "pupsave" to my hard drive to keep files and such. (I can also just move the pupsave to a USB or anywhere else, allowing me to make any computer with a CD and USB drive into the same Puppy Linux computer.) If you ONLY wanted to use your secret Puppy Linux for system mapping purposes, you can, and I see no reason why the blog/Wiki files themselves couldn't be easily exported so you could open them elsewhere.

So that might be something of interest and use to people!

I broke down again

I broke down again this morning. Since it is Saturday (as well as Shabbat), I went back to sleep after taking my dog out. And I had a dream that my mother was back with us, living among us as a family. I keep having dreams like this, but this one felt the most real. Usually when I have dreams like this, there’s usually a sinister undertone. Like something that is not my mother is wearing her face. But this felt so real. I could hear her voice, noticed the little quirks in her facial expressions that only she could make. And most of all, I felt her warmth when I hugged her and told her how much I loved her and missed her. And everyone was so confused. We were overjoyed that she was back but were so confused because we had already buried her and spent the past month experiencing an intense grief like we never felt before and finally accepting all of this for her to walk back into the house, looking healthier than she ever did when she was alive and telling us that she came back simply by “trying her hardest to wake back up.”

And as confused and as we all were, we were so happy. We were all so eager to readjust our lives so that she could easily reintegrate after her month long slumber. I kept thinking “it’s all going to be okay now. My mom is back. I’m going to make plans to go to the park with her and have lunch with her.”

And then I woke up. I was alone in my bedroom. My mother was gone.

I haven’t cried in two weeks. I felt like I was finally accepting what had happened and that I could finally get on with my life. The first week or so after she died, I was just bursting into tears at random throughout the day. While doing household chores, while at the grocery store, while out walking my dog. And it would be loud, nerve wracking sobs. But as the month went on, that didn’t happen anymore, even when I was visiting her grave at the cemetery every Wednesday.

This morning was like that first week all over again. The sheer emptiness at having what I had longed for ripped away when I could feel the warmth of it in my sleep. I haven’t been able to stop crying all morning. It feels like I’m back at square one.
